1. Definition
Freudian Psychology theory consist of three big concepts; Id, Ego, and Superego. Prominent among the developments in Freud’s theory of mental structures, dynamics, and processes was Freud’s model of the mind as having three types of function: the Id which incorporates libidinal and other desires, the superego which the internalization of standards of morality and propriety, and the ego which tries as best it can to negotiate the conflicts between the insatiable demand of the id, the impossibly stringent requirements of the superego and the limited possibilities of gratification offered by the world of “reality”.[1]
Id: its function to fulfill the primordial life-principle, naturally the id knows no values, morality, good and evil. Because it’s only an impulse to obtain satisfaction for the instinctual needs, in accordance with the pleasure principle, that’s why Freud defined the id is identical in many respect to the devil as defined by theologians. Other aspect to consider that id could lead us to any length, to destruction and even self-destruction to satisfy its impulse for pleasure, in short it’s the source of all our aggressions and desires, its function to gratify our instinct for pleasure without regard for social conventions, legal ethics, or moral restraints.
Ego is part of mind containing consciousness: in Freudian psychology, one of three main divisions of the mind, containing consciousness and memory and involved with control, planning, and conforming to reality.
"The poor ego has a still harder time of it; it has to serve three harsh masters, and has to do its best to reconcile the claims and demands of all three." (Sigmund Freud The Anatomy of the Mental Personality, Lecture 31)[2]
"The poor ego has a still harder time of it; it has to serve three harsh masters, and has to do its best to reconcile the claims and demands of all three." (Sigmund Freud The Anatomy of the Mental Personality, Lecture 31)[2]
Ego is the one of the three divisions of the psyche in psychoanalytic theory that serves as the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality esp. by functioning both in the perception of an adaptation to reality compare id superego.[3]
The superego is the aspect of personality that holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society--our sense of right and wrong. Freudian conscience: according to Freudian theory, the part of the mind that acts as a conscience to the ego, developing moral standards and rules through contact with parents and society[4]
2. The Story of Secret Sharer according to this theory
The story of the secret sharer is a story about one conflict on the sea. In this story the conflict happen between Legatt who suspected as a murder who escaped from the Sephora Ship and its leader, Captain Archbold. The story begins with a short description of a ship. The main character in the story is the Captain of the ship. One night he meets a man who stops to swim near the ladder of the ship. His name is Legatt. Legatt needs captain’s help because he killed someone from his ship, Sephora. The Captain lets him stay in his cabin without anyone knowing about him for some days. There is a strange existance based on secrecy and similarities between them. And then the ship sets sail for it’s destination to a desolate island where Legatt asks the captian to let him off. Archibold from Sephora came to search Legatt. But the captain hides Legatt. He let Legatt go at the coast of the island.
From the point of view of Id, Ego, Superego, we find Legatt as Id because he is the character who tried to escape from his punishment and get his free, the character who tried to negotiate the conflicts, the captain of the nameless ship reverse to Ego and Captain of Sephora who tried to take Legatt from the nameless ship and bring him to jail is the Superego. To strengthen our statement let us see to some facts that we found in the text.
3. Some facts about Captain’s, Legatt, and Archibald:
Legatt
1) He runs from his punishment, he murdered one of Sephora’s crew members even though he unintentionally kills him (page, 295,).
2) Escape from Sephora by swimming because he wants to run from his punishment (Page, 299, line 19; then a sudden temptation came over me…..).
3) Why he don’t want to be jailed, he don’t want to be jailed because it will ashamed his father who work as a parson and his family in Norfolk (page 296, line 19).
What we see from the example is that he doesn’t want to be brought to the jail where he supposed to be, and to avoid such a thing he tried to escape from his sentence. It’s same as the principle of id; it’s to escape the discomfort or other things that is not what based of his wants. And to escape the punishment he jumped from the Sephora ship and swim to nearest islet, bundle some stone with his cloth and throw it to the ocean to fake his death, this is like what is mentioned above, destruction and even self-destruction to satisfy its impulse for something, and in order to achieve such a thing he didn’t care about himself.
The captain of nameless ship
At the first time, Captain of the nameless ship perceives Legatt’s abilities. (293-294)”You must be a good swimmer”, “The self possession of that man”, “a real alternative in the view of a strong soul.”, and, “his expression was concentrated, meditative, under the inspecting light of the lamp I held up to his face; such as a man thinking hard in solitude might wear.”
From his identification, almost all about Legatt is good but the captain not directly helps him. He also considers what Archibold said to him. In page 306 Archibold rejects his opinion about Legatt ability to save Sephora by saying, “Under God-it did…. It was by a special mercy, I firmly believe, that it stood some of those hurricane squalls.” Again Archibold said that he is not like Legatt meant hate. “But do you know-I never liked him, somehow. I am a plain man. You see, he wasn’t exactly the sort of the chief mate of a ship like the Sephora. I had no doubt in my mind.”
Just after that The Captain had no doubt in his mind.”I had become so connected in thoughts and impressions with the secret sharer of my cabin that I felt as if I, personally, were being given to understand that I, too, was not the sort that would have done for the chief mate of a ship like the Sephora.” At the end of the story, he allowed Legatt to go. Legatt had lowered into the water to take his punishment: a free man, a proud swimmer striking out for a new destiny.
Ego’s ability to consider problems is starting from opening mind and communication for identifying the characters, considering the decisions and takes a decision.
Archibalds
1. In page 306, when the unknown Captain questions him, "you were anxious to give up your mate to the sore people, I believe?"
That question leads us to the point of view that he follows the Conscience to engage this problem into the law. He realized that the behavior of murdering is forbidden and he should be sent to the law.
2. In page 306, Archbold says, “I have been at sea now, man and boy" for seven and thirty years and I’ve never heard of such thing happened in an English ship. And that should be my ship. Wife on board, too."
It shows the effect of super- ego. Because of the superego that he is followed, he can say that statement, right? If he doesn't act right, we think that he won't say those statements, actually. He shows his pride , value, and accomplishment that in 37 years working on the ship, he never make any mistakes, fallacy or bad behavior or in other words he is a well-mannered Captain who follows the ego ideal.
4. Conclusion
Looking to the characters
Psychoanalytic help people who read this work to see the characters who plays their part in the story. It is started from the beginning of the story until the end of the story. By this approach the reader brought to the way of life of every character. In this case, they could learn how the mechanism of psyche in them self as well as in the story. How the characters stand for their belief and way of life give a better map for the reader to understand the story and its message. The message is something that the reader wants to know.
In this story, the revelation and truth is to accommodate pleasure which performed by Legatt. How to empowering the Ego is by identifying Id and Superego as well as what captain of the nameless ship. And we also see that Superego is not always good to follow. In this story, Superego which is representing by Archbold is not followed. It is because of the law or moral values that struggled by Archibold is not purely for the betterment of society. What Archibold did is right but not exactly touch tauch problem. The problem is from the beginning where he hates Legatt. So that he didn’t account the situation and background of what Legatt did. In his eyes there is only Legatt the killer without any virtuous. There is no Legatt who save the Sephora and There is no Legatt who are in the bad situation, who is fighting in the storm, and because of the insult of person who killed by the worst condition after he left. What archbold see is only a killer.
While captain of the nameless ship as the main character is a model of goodness, which is experience the process of Ego. Identification, consideration, and make a decision here are clear. This is the ideal person who can solve the conflict in the story. His decision is not only merely that he is comfort and found something in Legatt. His decision came up after he heard Archibold.
Legatt who followed his pleasure is not merely wrong because he just trapped in the unclear situation. He fought in the middle of the storm and after the water of the sea attack them, his enemis lost. It made him jailed to sent him to the court of law in Norfolk. He want to be free because he thought he saved the ship in the storm. On the other hand he also thinks about his father and family in Norfolk. He did not want to make shame. In this case, he followed pleasure to be free.
Impoverishment
The characters in the story seem not holistic. They are only following their id, ego, or superego. In fact human is complex because all human being has those three elements of psyche. In this case impoverishment happens. The reader trapped in the main character the captain and two major characters, archibold and Legatt who has a conflict. This approach trapped the reader to fulfill the theories without a considering the complexity of all characters.
Minor characters like the chief mate and steward of nameless ship are not considered as an important part of the story. In fact they are also part of the story and have their complexity. For example like a story about Scorpio which founded in the dark cabin of chief mate drown itself in the inkwell of his writing desk.
The Psychoanalytical theory centered the story on the human interaction. While the setting, places, and time are also has meaning. In this case, the use of this theory trapped the reader only to focus on human matter and not to the environment where the story is. Tropical forest, nomad tribe of fishermen and bamboo fences contribute big pocket of meaning and influence. The use of items, the use of clothes, how people acts are not explored. They are not considered in this particular approach. In this case we could say yes for the statement that psychoanalytical discussion also run the risk of impoverishing.
